Talcher Fertiliser Plant In Odisha To Become Operational By Sept 2023: Union Min

New Delhi: The state-owned fertiliser plant in Odisha’s Talcher, which is being revived at an estimated cost of Rs 8,000 crore,  is expected to start operations by September 2023, Union Minister of Chemical and Fertilizers D. V. Sadananda Gowda said on Friday.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, he said that the Centre had given approval for restarting the Talcher Fertilizers Ltd (TFL), a joint venture (JV) between GAIL India Ltd, Coal India Ltd (CIL), Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd (RCF) and FCIL.

The plant had stopped production in March 1999. It was earlier owned by Fertilizer Corporation of India Ltd (FCIL).

In a first-of-its-kind in the country, the coal gasification-based ammonia-urea project would have a design capacity of 2,200 tonnes per day of ammonia and 3,850 tonnes per day of urea, according to a report published in the Business Standard.

Besides 100 tonne per day of sulphur flakes, the plant will produce 2.38 million tonne cubic metres per day of natural gas equivalent synthesis gas from coal, it further said.
During the construction period, the plant is expected to employ around 10,000 people and provide direct and indirect employment opportunities to 4,000 once it becomes operational.

Mine development activity has begun in the captive coal mine allotted to TFL in the region and it will ensure steady supply and quality of the feedstock for continuous operations, the report added.
