Sonepat: Talented wrestler Nisha Dahiya clarified on Wednesday that news of her being shot dead was ‘fake’.
“I am in Gonda to play senior nationals. I am alright. It’s a fake news (reports of her death). I am fine,” Nisha said in a video issued by Wrestling Federation of India.
Even fellow-wrestler and Olympic bronze-medallist Sakshi Malik tweeted that Nisha is safe.
It was reported earlier in the evening that Nisha, who won a bronze medal at the under-23 World wrestling championships five days ago, was killed along with her brother by unidentified assailants at Sushil Kumar Wrestling Academy in Sonepat.
National TV channels and news agency PTI splashed the news, saying that Nisha’s mother had survived the attack but was hospitalised in a critical condition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi this morning praised Nisha and other medal winners in the World meet.
“Congratulations to Shivani, Anju, Divya, Radhika and Nisha for winning medals at the Wrestling Championships in Belgrade. Their performance is special and will contribute to wrestling becoming even more popular across India,” Modi tweeted.
