Tata Steel Unveils India’s First SLS Plant For GCP Slurry In Ferro Alloys Industry

Joda: Tata Steel unveiled the Solid Liquid Separation (SLS) Plant for
Gas Cleaning Plant (GCP) slurry in its Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP) at
Joda of Keonjhar district on Tuesday.

Inaugurating the SLS Plant, Vice President, (Raw Materials), Tata
Steel Rajeev Singhal said, “As a responsible corporate, Tata Steel had
been undertaking several such initiatives that contributed towards
sustainability of the environment. The SLS Plant, besides conserving
water, would prevent water from sludge pits percolating into ground
and contaminating ground water.”

Executive In-Charge, Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD) M C
Thomas, General Manager, Operations, FAMD, Tata Steel R R Satpathy and
Head, FAP, Joda G P Sahu were present on the occasion.

Installed at a cost of nearly Rs. 8 crore at FAP, Joda, the SLS Plant
is an environment-friendly initiative, set to recover manganese-rich
solid from the wet gas cleaning plant slurry. Water recovered by the
processing of GCP slurry will be fully recycled, leading to water
conservation to the tune of 15 cubic metre per hour.

Also, the recovery of manganese-rich solids makes it possible to
recycle the same, for production of Ferro Manganese. It helps conserve
valuable high-grade manganese ore and use lower grade of Fe-rich
manganese ore. Manganese-rich solid cakes from the new SLS Plant will
be used for production of Ferro Manganese after suitable
agglomeration.

FAP-Joda, set up in 1958 with an installed capacity 36 KMT, presently
produces 50 KMT of High Carbon Ferro Manganese per annum, official
sources said.

Tata Steel Group is among the top global steel companies with an
annual crude steel capacity of 27.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) as
on March 31, 2017. It is a geographically-diversified steel producer,
with operations in 26 countries and a commercial presence in over 50
countries. The Group recorded a consolidated turnover of US $18.12
billion (INR 117,420 crore) in FY17. Tata Steel Group is spread across
five continents with an employee base of nearly 70,000 employees as of
March 31, 2017. Tata Steel has been felicitated with several awards
including the Deming Grand Prize for continuous improvement in 2012,
Prime Minister’s Trophy for the best performing integrated steel plant
for 2015-16, ‘Greenco Platinum Rating’ by CII Green Building Council
for environmental performance at Jamshedpur Works (2016), ‘Best Place
To Work’ in the core sector (steel, oil, power and minerals) by
Business Today (2017), ‘World’s Most Ethical Company’ award from the
Ethisphere Institute (2017), among several others.
