Sonepur: Schools in Odisha, like in rest of the country, have been closed since the third week of March, when nationwide lockdown was announced by the government to curb the spread of coronavirus.
Classes are being held online for nine months now. But when schools finally reopen, sometime next year, there will be a surprise in store for students of Samaleichuan High School at Dunguripali in Sonepur district.
They will return to their old school, with a new look.
Lots of trees have been planted and a water fountain installed in the school premises, making it look like a park.
While students have been studying from home, the teachers went to the school and transformed it with their caring efforts.
They planted 35 different flower-bearing plants and trees, as well as 40 types of medicated plants. They have also cultivated vegetables and fruits.
The parents and local people have lauded the teachers’ effort.
“Our school has been closed for nine months, students have not coming. To do something new, we the teachers engaged ourselves in beautifying the school premises. It was made possible with the help of some kind-hearted people and the government,” said Suresh Pujahari, one of the teachers.
The state government is taking several measures to make it attractive for children when they return to schools.
Teachers of Samaleichuan HS hope that the children will take a liking for the park and colourful surroundings.
The villagers feel that the children will get a natural and healthy environment to study in.
As an added benefit, some unemployed people got work during lockdown period, helping teachers beautify the school.
