Techie From Odisha’s Berhampur Succumbs To Post-COVID Complications In Chennai

Bhubaneswar: Amit Pradhan, a software engineer from Odisha who was suffering from post-COVID complications, breathed his last at Apollo Hospital in Chennai on Tuesday night.

Amrit’s sister Manisha Pradhan informed about his demise last night.

A native of Berhampur,  the techie was airlifted to Chennai from AIIMS-Bhubaneswar for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support and lung transplantation on June 4 after he developed pneumonia and septicaemia in the lungs.

He had undergone a successful lung transplant at the hospital last month. The surgery lasted for 19 long hours. He was also operated on for a cyst in the right ventricle of his heart. However, he succumbed after an almost six-month-long battle with COVID related complications.

The 25-year-old had contracted the infection while taking care of his parents who had tested positive for the virus. He was admitted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, on May 2 and had to be put on a ventilator from May 12.  When his condition did not show any signs of improvement, the doctors advised his family for a lung transplant and better treatment. He was airlifted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai after his family and friends managed to raise Rs 70 lakh for his treatment via crowdfunding.

In September, Abhishek Mohapatra of Odisha’s Bhadrak had died due to post-COVID complications after undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment in Kolkata for around three months.

In August, former Odisha Youth Congress president Sangram Keshari Jena had succumbed to post-COVID complications at a hospital in Hyderabad. He was airlifted to the private healthcare facility on May 23 for ECMO treatment after his condition deteriorated.
