Bhubaneswar: Notwithstanding thunderstorms activities in some parts of Odisha, as many as 16 places in the state reeled under temperature of 40 degree Celsius on more on Tuesday.
According to evening bulletin of the regional centre of India Meteorological department in Bhubaneswar, Jharsuguda replaced Sambalpur as the hottest place in the state recording a temperature of 43.8 degree Celsius, while Sambalpur continued to sizzle under 43.6 degree Celsius.
Sambalpur was followed by Hirakud with 43.3 degree Celsius, Rourkela 42.4, Baripada 42, Sonepur 41.8, Balangir 41.7, Sundargarh 41.2, Bargarh 41.1 and Malkangiri and Nuapada 41.
Bhubaneswar, which saw mercury remaining below 40 degree for the last few days, witnessed a spike in temperature to 41.9 degree while Cuttack recorded 39.5 degree Celsius.
The IMD has forecast no large change in maximum temperature (day temperature) during next 5 days. It is likely to remain above normal by 2-4 degree Celsius at a few places in the state and consequently hot weather condition is likely to be over during next 4-5 days.
Meanwhile, the progress of the southwest monsoon towards Kerala coast is likely to be impeded due to formation of a low-pressure area in Southeast Arabian Sea.
The IMD said the low-pressure, which formed over Southeast Arabian Sea last night, intensified into a depression on Tuesday morning and is expected to become a cyclone in next 24 hours.
