Balasore: Several temporary structures allegedly used for sex trade on a sea beach in Odisha’s Balasore were demolished on Thursday.
According to sources, Udaypur beach under Bhogarai block of the district has been attracting tourists from the state and outside of its scenic natural beauty. Over the years, local people set up shops, stalls and pushing carts to sell various things to the tourists.
In the last few months, several makeshift huts had come up on the beach. The locals alleged that some pimps were operating in the area and using the makeshift places for prostitutions with sex workers brought mostly from neighbouring West Bengal.
Following the complaints by the locals about sex rackets, a team of officials led by Bhogarai tehsildar Sushant Kuma Patnaik along with 3 platoons of police arrived at the beach on the day. After making demarcation of the area, the structures were demolished with the bulldozers.
The officials of Excise department, Revenue department, Fire Services and power supply were engaged in the demolition work. Total 100 structures with tin and asbestos roofs were demolished in the drive.
Balasore district SP Sagarika Nath told the media persons that they would conduct an investigation into the complaints of the locals and take necessary action against those running the racket.
