Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high at Utkal University here on Tuesday afternoon after some miscreants allegedly assaulted a student and kidnapped him.
Sources said a group of miscreants barged into the university premises and thrashed Soumya Ranjan Mohapatra, a BJD supported candidate, who had contested the students’ union election last year, and kidnapped him.
Following the incident, irate students staged a blockade on the National Highway in front of the main gate of the university demanding immediate arrest of the miscreants.
Vehicular traffic was disrupted for nearly an hour due to the blockade.
The students lifted the blockade after Saheed Nagar police assured them of action against the kidnappers.
The students later lodged a complaint with the Saheed Nagar police and submitted a memorandum to the DCP, demanding immediate arrest of the hooligans involved in the incident.
