Mumbai: Filmmaker Kunal Kohli has urged Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) chief Tukaram Mundhe to turn his attention to Indian kitchens, claiming that expired food items could be found in many homes.
His remarks come amid discussions around food safety and the importance of checking stored food products for their expiry dates.
Taking to Instagram on Sunday, Kohli wrote, “I request Tukaram Munde to raid kitchen shelves & refrigerators in Indian Households across the country.”
Kohli’s post highlighted a common household habit of holding on to old food products simply because they remain neatly stored in kitchen cabinets.
He noted that certain food products can remain untouched for years, raising questions about their safety and expiry status.
“There will be expired items, from years ago, neatly & safely preserved, the bottles & packets wiped clean every month & put back on the shelf or refrigerator never to be used again,” he said.
The filmmaker took his suggestion a step further by turning it into a challenge for households.
Instead of waiting for an official inspection, he urged people to check their kitchen shelves and refrigerators for old or expired food items.
“Chalo let’s do a Tukaram Munde cleaning of our kitchen shelves & refrigerator,” he wrote.
Kohli’s remarks come as the Maharashtra FDA continues inspections at establishments involved in food preparation and sale across the state.
The department has been conducting checks at restaurants, hotels, roadside eateries and other food outlets to monitor food safety standards.
On the work front, Kohli made his directorial debut with Mujhse Dosti Karoge! in 2002.
He went on to direct successful films such as Hum Tum and Fanaa, followed by Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Teri Meri Kahaani.
He later ventured into Telugu cinema with Next Enti? and went on to helm projects including Lahore Confidential and Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story.
