‘They Made Me Sign….’: Sanjay Roy Pleads Innocence Ahead Of Sentencing In R G Kar Rape-Murder Case

Kolkata: Ahead of pronouncement of the quantum of punishment, R G Kar rape-murder convict Sanjay Roy reiterated in Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court on Monday afternoon that he has been falsely implicated in the case.

“I haven’t done this. I have been framed. Lots of things were destroyed, but if I had done it then my rudraksha mala would have broken. I have already told you that I was tortured. They made me sign whatever they wanted…,” he told the court during hearing of convict’s self-defence.

Stating that he has to deliver justice, additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das said: “I told you the previous day the charges you were convicted against and the charges that have been proven against you. I decide on the basis of the evidence before me. I have heard you as well for three hours. Your lawyer has argued your case. Now I want to know your views on the punishment.”

The CBI has argued that this is the rarest of the rare crime which demands a death penalty. “The doctor was doing a service to the society,” it added.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has also demanded capital punishment for Roy.

The parents of the deceased doctor have, however, claimed that several others would have been arrested and convicted had the CBI properly investigated the case.

On January 18, the court declared Roy guilty of rape and murder of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year. The charges under which Roy has been convicted entail a minimum sentence of life imprisonment, while the maximum can be capital punishment.

The sentencing will be pronounced at 2.45 pm with the entire Sealdah court area cordoned off with a three-tier barricade system and massive police deployment.
