Chandigarh: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was on Saturday released from Sunaria jail in Rohtak after receiving 40-day parole from a Haryana court.
He has been serving a 20-year term since 2017 after being convicted in a special CBI court for raping two women disciples at his ashram’s headquarters in Sirsa.
This is the third time that the self-proclaimed godman has got parole in the last seven months.
His request for 40-day parole to attend an event was granted in October 2022.
Last June also, he was granted parole – for a period of one month — ahead of Haryana panchayat election and Adampur assembly bypoll.
In February 2022, Ram Rahim was granted three weeks’ furlough.
Parole means the release of a prisoner temporarily for a special purpose or completely before the expiry of a sentence, on the promise of good behaviour. Furlough, on the other hand, is a short-term temporary release of convicts from jail.
