New Delhi: The Khalistani threat is rearing its head seriously
Amid a massive manhunt for radical Sikh preacher and Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh, there has been a threat to take down the Indian Tricolour and replace it with a banner for Khalistan at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan, venue of a high-profile G20 meeting in September.
Police have launched an investigation after receiving a tip-off from a person who received an audio recording from an unknown number two days ago, reported NDTV.
The audio message mentioned Amritpal’s supporters will take over Pragati Maidan and pull down the flag of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were also allegedly abused in the audio message.
The police filed a First Information Report or FIR, including charges of trying to stoke a riot and affect law and order. The audio recording was received by a passenger flying into the Delhi Airport.
Police, who are trying to trace the origin of the audio clip, have strengthened security at Pragati Maidan — a large exhibition and convention centre where many national and international events are held — and other sensitive locations in India’s capital.
Delhi Police on Friday opened an investigation into a pro-Amritpal protest earlier this week at the Indian High Commission in London, where a group of people with Khalistan banners took down an Indian flag from a first-floor balcony of the building.
