Nayagarh: Three BJP workers were seriously injured following a group clash at a hotel in Nayagarh town on Sunday afternoon.
According to sources, president of the Nayagarh District Congress Committee, Irani Ray, had recently joined the BJP after resigning from the Congress.
On Sunday she had organised a meeting of the local think-tanks and senior citizens of the town to mark the completion of the fourth year of the first term of the BJP government at the Centre.
Trouble started when a group of dissident BJP workers of a local leader, who was defeated in the last Assembly election, arrived at the hotel and engaged in a verbal duel with Ray’s supporters as they were not informed about the meeting in advance and had a heated exchange of words. The situation subsequently turned violent as both the groups engaged in fisticuffs and attacked each other with chairs in which three workers sustained head injuries.
Following information, police rushed to the hotel and admitted the three injured workers to the district headquarters hospital.
Following the incident, leader of the BJP legislature party KV Singhdeo and party’s state unit general secretary, Prithviraj Harichandan rushed to Nayagarh from Bhubaneswar to take stock of the situation.
