Angul: Organs donated by the family of a brain-dead man from Odisha’s Angul district provided a new lease of life to three critically-ill persons on Monday.

Ritesh Pradhan (32), was from the Serenda village in the Handapa police station area in Angul. A private firm employee, he was returning home from Bantala on March 4 on a motorcycle when he met with an accident near Sardhapur.

Locals rushed him to the Angul

District Headquarters Hospital with serious head injuries. He was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after his condition deteriorated. His family later got him admitted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Doctors there diagnosed him with a severe brain injury. Despite their best efforts, Pradhan was declared brain dead.

Despite their grief, Pradhan’s family decided to donate his organs. His wife Kalyani Nayak, who serves in the Odisha Police, gave her consent.

His kidneys and liver were then removed and transported for transplantation. The two kidneys were taken to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, and transplanted into two patients.

The liver was sent to a private hospital for transplantation into another patient.

This step taken by Pradhan’s kin has been appreciated by authorities.
