Puri: The Town Police here have arrested three youths in connection with the attack on a miscreant, who succumbed to his injuries at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Wednesday morning.
A country-made pistol, a sword and a motorcycle were seized from their possession.
Police refused to reveal the identities of the accused to the media saying that the investigation is underway.
The incident had taken place near Gundicha Temple at Saradhabali in the early hours of Tuesday when Sanjay Behera alias Para, a wanted criminal was shot at by three unidentified youths.
According to eyewitnesses, Sanjay had come to the market area near Nakachana Dwara of the temple when three miscreants, hiding near a place suddenly opened fire on him. Following the incident, Para tried to run away from the area as one bullet missed him. But the three youths chased him and opened another round of fire on him, which hit his left shoulder. After Para fell down, the youths smashed his head with a brick and fled the area.
Following information, a team of Kumbharapada police and a scientific team rushed to the spot. Police later admitted Para to the district headquarters hospital. Later, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital as his condition became critical.
Police said the deceased ,who was recently released from the jail, had several bombing and extortion cases pending against him at the Town Police Station and the Kumbharapada Police Station.
