Dhenkanal: Three members of a family died on the spot when a speeding truck rammed into the car in which they were travelling on National Highway-55 near Nimabahali under Motanga police limits in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district in the wee hours of Monday.
The deceased have been identified as Gobind Tripathy, an employee of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), his wife Monalisa Tripahty and their 25-year-old son Swarup Tripathy. They were natives of Sadasivpur village in Odapada block of Dhenkanal district.
Family sources said the trio were on vacation to Andaman and arrived at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar on Sunday night. Later, they left for Balanda under Talcher block of Angul district in their Maruti Alto car (OR-02-6191)
While on the way, a speeding truck coming towards Dhenkanal lost control and collided head-on with the car. The family members were squeezed inside the vehicle and died on the spot.
On being informed, a team of Motanga police and a fire brigade unit rushed to the spot and got the bodies out of the mangled remains of the car with the help of a gas cutter.
The bodies were later taken to the Dhenkanal district headquarters hospital for post-mortem.
Efforts are on to nab the truck driver who fled the area with the vehicle soon after the mishap, police said.
