Bhubaneswar: Amid the prevailing severe heatwave conditions, the India Meteorological Department on Sunday issued nowcast warning of thunderstorm and lighting accompanied by rain for three districts of Odisha till 8 pm.
Light to moderate thunderstorm with gusty wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph, lightning and light to moderate rain may occur in some parts of Bhadrak and Puri districts in 3 hours. Yellow warning of thunderstorm and lightning along with light to moderate rain has also been issued for some parts of Khurda during this period.
People have been advised to keep a watch on the weather and accordingly move to safer places.
Notably, the mercury had soared past 40°C at five places with Bhubaneswar being the hottest at 43.2°C followed by Keonjhar (42.7°C), Chandbali (42.2°C), Balasore (41.4°C), and Rourkela (40.6°C) by 2.30 this afternoon amid red warning of severe heatwave condition for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Khurda, Cuttack, Jajpur, and Boudh.
Orange warning of heatwave has also been sounded for Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, and Ganjam, Gajapati, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Rayagada and yellow warning for Koraput, Puri, Deogarh, and Sundargarh districts. Hot and humid weather condition may also prevail in Koraput and Puri, according to the midday bulletin.
There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain/thundershower at one or two places in Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Nuapada, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam till 8.30 am on Monday.
The heatwave is likely to persist till May 2.
