Bhubaneswar: Even as Odisha continues to reel under heatwave and severe heatwave conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday forecast thunderstorm with lightning and light to moderate rain in two districts till 6.40 pm.
The yellow warning has been issued for Khurda and Puri districts. People have been advised to keep a watch on the weather and accordingly move to safer places.
Earlier in the day, the weather agency had issued orange warning of heatwave to severe heatwave for Gajapati, Ganjam, Balasore, Nuapada, Mayurbhanj, and Bhadrak districts till 8.30 am on Friday. Heatwave condition may also prevail in Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Angul, and Khurda while warm nights are expected in Keonjhar and Sambalpur.
Yellow warning of heatwave has also been issued for Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Balangir, Boudh, Kandhamal, and Cuttack during this period.
While the Met office has predicted that the day temperature may soar to 43°C in Bhubaneswar during the day, the city recorded 42.2°C by 2.30 pm, only second to Jharsuguda at 43.6°C. The other places where mercury soared past 40°C include Hirakud (42.2°C), Sambalpur (42.2°C), Keonjhar (41.8°C), Chandbali (41.8°C), Rourkela (41.4°C), and Balasore (41°C).
The IMD has also issued red warning of heatwave for two days from Friday.
