Tiger Census Through Camera Traps In Odisha’s Similipal National Park From Nov 30

Baripada: The tiger census through camera traps inside Similipal National Park in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district will start on November 23.

Speaking to the media persons on Friday, Similipal ranger Ghasinath Patra said the tiger census is already underway in Similipal as part of the tiger census across the state which started on October 18 and would continue till January 20, 2024.

“In Similipal Park, the tiger census is carried out in four phases. In the transact line survey, team members are going inside the forests and surveying plants, trees, and other fauna. The census through camera traps will continue from November 23 to January 18, 2024,” he said.

He further said the team that will conduct the survey will be monitored by range officers, assistant conservators of forests (ACsFs) and deputy directors of the Similipal Tiger Reserve to ensure exact enumeration of the big cat in the sanctuary.

As many as 209 teams of trained Forest officials have been engaged to conduct the tiger survey in 209 beats under 19 forest ranges of Similipal. A sign survey was carried out from October 18 to 20 and line transact survey is underway from October 25.

Besides, counting of vultures, birds of prey, and other bird species will be conducted on October 29.
