TISS To Open Healthcare Hub In Bhubaneswar Soon

Bhubaneswar: Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), School of Vocational Education, is all set to open a hub in healthcare here in association with Acrux Knowledge Centre (AKC) to skill young people in an attempt to bridge the huge manpower gap of trained professionals in the sector.
In a first in the state, the institute will provide Bachelor Degree in Vocational Education (B.Voc) and Diploma Programmes in Patient Care Management, Medical Lab Technology, X-ray and Ultra Sound Assistance. The admission to these courses will start from July this year.
“The need for trained manpower in the healthcare sector has risen because of the lack of skilled people in the sector. Given the rate at which the health sector is growing in the country, the shortfall will be enormous in the next decade, if the issue is not addressed

immediately,” said Manaswini Swain, the Hub Director.

The Indian healthcare industry has been growing at 12 percent per annum over the last four years. It is being attributed to a rise in life expectancy, improved income levels, health insurance, life-style related diseases and improved technology.

The hub would open new vistas for the local youth in the medical care sector in the coming years with guaranteed employment, she added.

Besides, the Institute would have tie ups with major hospitals in the state for knowledge acquisition and to help arrange for bank loans.

Dr. Medha Somaiya of the institute said, “Hospitals and nursing homes are Rs.60,000 crore per annum-industry in the country.  In the next ten years, the country would require 1.5 million doctors against the present strength of 7.5 lakh. Similarly, the strength of trained nurses would go up from the existing 3.7 million to 11 million. Supply of paramedics and technician will also grow four-fold.”
