Kolkata: A Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader in West Bengal has been accused of publicly assaulting a couple in Uttar Dinajpur district’s Chopra.
A video has gone viral showing a woman and a man being beaten up in broad daylight for their ‘illicit relationship’.
BJP and CPI(M) shared the video, alleging that the couple was thrashed by a TMC worker in Chopra area for sharing an ‘illicit relationship’.
Islampur police superintendent Joby Thomas K told PTI on Sunday that after watching and verifying the video clip on social media, a case has been registered.
“We have initiated raids to arrest the culprit and will investigate the reason behind the act promptly,” Thomas said.
BJP’s West Bengal unit claimed that the man seen beating up the couple with bamboo stick is a local TMC leader named Tajemul alias ‘JCB’.
The incident took place at a ‘salishi sabha’ (kangaroo court), according to PTI.
CPI(M) state secretary Mohammad Salim claimed it was like ‘bulldozer justice’.
“Not even #KangarooCourt! Summary trial and punishment handed out by @AITCofficial goon… Literally bulldozer justice at Chopra under @MamataOfficial rule,” Salim posted on X.
Hamidur Rahman, TMC MLA from the region, denied any connection with the accused, saying it was a village matter and doesn’t concern the party.
TMC district president Kaniyalal Agarwal said the couple’s alleged illicit relationship did not go down well with the villagers, and assured a probe from the party’s side.
Condemning the incident, TMC spokesperson Shantanu Sen pointed out that such kangaroo courts were common during the Left Front regime too.
