Agartala: Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Tripura’s BJP-headed government are on warpath ahead of municipal elections in the north-eastern state.

A day after actor-politician Saayoni Ghosh was arrested by Tripura police for allegedly “disturbing” chief minister Biplab Deb’s public meeting, a local court on Monday granted bail to TMC’s youth wing leader.

Other charges were slapped on Saayoni — of allegedly promoting enmity between people, attempt to murder, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.

Earlier in the day, a delegation of TMC MPs met Union Home minister Amit Shah in Delhi to register their protest against alleged police brutality and attacks on its workers in Tripura.

The last few weeks have seen several clashes between party workers of BJP and TMC during poll campaign programmes in Tripura. Former Union minister Babul Supriyo, who recently switched from BJP to TMC, claimed on Saturday that he was harassed by BJP workers during his visit to Agartala.

The TMC has even moved the Supreme Court, which will hear a contempt plea on Tuesday regarding deteriorating law and order situation in Tripura ahead of the November 25 civic polls. The apex court last week directed Tripura police to ensure no political party was prevented from exercising its rights in accordance with law for political campaigning in a peaceful manner.

Home minister Shah told the TMC delegation that said he had spoken to the Tripura chief minister over phone on Sunday and will seek a report from the state, ANI reported.

TMC chief and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said she will discuss the Tripura violence issue during her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week.

“The administration, the BJP and the chief minister himself are defying the Supreme Court verdict. The Tripura issue will be raised in Delhi, Mumbai and everywhere else. I’ll meet the PM regarding this issue. They want to capture power and bulldoze the federal structure in the name of cooperative federalism,” Mamata Banerjee was quoted as saying by PTI.
