Bhubaneswar: Even as the ECoR stated that 6 persons were killed as a goods train ran over them in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Wednesday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced compensation for the families of the victims.
The East Coast Railway in a release said some contractual labourers, engaged by a contractor for Railway work , had taken shelter under the stabled rake to get protection from the wind and rain of Nor’wester near Jajpur-Keonjar Road.
“A monsoon reserve rake without engine reserved at the sick line near Jajpur-Keonjhar Road rolled on due to heavy thunderstorms. As a result, 6 persons were run over and two are injured. The injured persons were taken to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack by Railways for their treatment”, the ECoR release said.
Railway officials led by DRM Khurda Road have rushed to the spot for take stock of the situation.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his deep sorrow for the families of the labourers who died in the accident. He announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for each family of the victims. He has also issued direction for immediate treatment of the injured persons.
