Traces Of Sugar Found In ‘Sugar-Free’ Sweets In Odisha Capital

Bhubaneswar: In a big revelation regarding ‘sugar-free’ sweet dishes being sold in the market, traces of sugar have been found in samples that were collected and tested in Odisha capital.

The test report showed that the sweet shop owners have been allegedly misleading people across Bhubaneswar by advertising ‘sugar-free’ sweets.

Several complaints of increased blood sugar levels after consuming the ‘sugar-free’ sweets led to suspicion. Following this, samples of ‘Chenaapoda’, a special delicacy of Odisha, were collected from a reputed sweet shop claiming the sweets to be absolutely ‘sugar-free’ on September 28 by a local news channel representative.

The samples were sent to State Food Testing Laboratory at Convent square near Ram Mandir in Bhubaneswar.

The test was conducted as per the standards of the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and traces of sugar were found in the samples.

The test report further stated that artificial sweeteners such as saccharin, dulcin and cyclamate are also being used in the ‘sugar-free’ sweets that are being sold.

“The quality of Chhenapoda is found to be sub-standard under section 3.1 of FSS Act, 2006 due to the presence of sugar,” read the report.
