Baripada: Ailing ‘Yashoda’, a trained elephant, died during treatment at Similipal in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Monday, around six months after it was relocated from Chandaka area.
The Kumki elephant, aged around 60 years, had been ailing after its relocation. It died in the morning while undergoing treatment at Jenabil forest range under Similipal forest division, Forest department officials said.
Notably, Yashoda was relocated to Similipal from Chandaka forest near Bhubaneswar around six months ago. After relocation, it fell ill in Similipal and underwent treatment after the health condition worsened three months ago. However, the veterinarians failed to save her.
Notably, the trained elephant was earlier engaged to keep a watch on the movements of other wildlife. In 2018, the forest department had taken help of Yashoda to tranquilise tigress ‘Sundari’ at Satkosia forest.
