Bhubaneswar: India carried out a successful training launch of short-range ballistic missile Prithvi-II on Tuesday.
According to a Ministry of Defence release, the missile was launched from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur off Odisha coast. “The missile struck its target with high accuracy. The user training launc
h successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile,” the ministry said.
A well-established system, Prithvi-II missile, has been an integral part of India’s nuclear deterrence. It is a short-range, surface-to-surface ballistic missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is part of Prithvi missile series which includes Prithvi-I, Prithvi-II, Prithvi-III, and Dhanush.
Prithvi II is an indigenously developed nuclear-capable missile and is capable of carrying a payload upto 500 kg. With a range of 350 km, it is capable of carrying conventional as well as nuclear warheads. The missile is powered by a liquid propulsion system and has a high-thrust engine.
