Sikkim: Tremors were felt in Sikkim after an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 on the Richter Scale struck Soreng area around 06:57am on Friday, according to the National Center for Seismology.
The earthquake struck at a depth of 10km (latitude 27.22 North and longitude 88.33 East.) So far, no casualties have been reported.
Earlier on August 6, an earthquake of magnitude 3.7 had hit Kamjong in Manipur.
The epicentre of the earthquake was located at Latitude 25.00 North, Longitude 94.57 East, at a depth of 85 kilometres, according to the National Center for Seismology.
Surrounded by two active plate boundaries, experts said the North East India was one of the most seismically active regions across the world. Thus, it is vulnerable to earthquakes.
A day before, two powerful earthquakes had struck Japan, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake was centred off the eastern coast of Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu at a depth of about 30 km (18.6 miles). A tsunami alert was also issued.
