Jajpur: Commemorating the 12th anniversary of the Kalinga Nagar
police firing incident in 2006 which killed 14 tribals, hundreds of
tribals and members of various people’s organisations observed
Martyrs’ Day (Shaheed Divas) by taking out a rally from Champakoila
village to Veer Bhumi in Jajpur district on Tuesday.
Later, the tribals paid tributes at the martyrs’ memorial pillar at
Veer Bhumi, where the victims of the firing incident were cremated.
Heavy police force was deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
Two Executive Magistrates, two DSPs, five inspectors, ten officers and
six platoons of force were deployed at the spot.
On January 2, 2006, the police opened fire at the local tribals who
were protesting against the takeover and seizure of their land by a
Tata Steel Plant. Ten persons died on the spot while four others
succumbed in the hospital.
