Tribunal Team To Visit Odisha This Week For Mahanadi Basin Field Inspection

Bhubaneswar: A team of Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal (MWDT) is scheduled to conduct field inspection of the Mahanadi river basin in Odisha from February 26 to March 2.

The directive, issued by the Home Department’s Protocol Section on February 20, outlines detailed arrangements to be made by district administrations, police authorities, and depar

tments concerned to ensure smooth coordination throughout the visit.

The Odisha government has officially designated the chairperson and members as state guests during their upcoming official visit.

The tribunal was constituted by the central government in March 2018 under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956, to resolve the long-standing water-sharing dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Field visits form a vital component of its fact-finding efforts, allowing members to directly assess technical and environmental factors that go beyond written documentation.

While the tenure of the tribunal is set to expire on April 13 this year, the state government in February requested the Centre to extend its tenure by another nine months.
