Triple Murder Rocks Odisha Village; Youth Stones Parents & Sister To Death Over Online Games Addiction



Jagatsinghpur: In a gruesome incident, a 22-year-old youth allegedly killed three members of his family at a village in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district in the early hours of Tuesday.

As per preliminary information, the youth allegedly stoned his parents and sister to death at their house in Jayabada village under the jurisdiction of Sadar Police Station in the district.

The deceased were identified as Prashant Sethy (65), his wife Kanaklata (62) and daughter Rosalin (25). The accused, identified as Surjyakant Sethy, changed clothes after committing the crime and then went and confessed to it before some of his neighbours.

Sources said Suryakant entered into a heated argument with his parents and sister, over some issue before committing the crime. Suryakant was unemploye

d and stayed at home after completing studies while his father worked as a daily-wage labourer in the market to support the family. Two other sons of the couple live separately, said locals.

Neighbours saw the bodies lying in a pool of blood around 3.30 am and informed police.

On being informed, a police team visited the site and initiated an investigation. SP Bhawani Sankar Udgata, Jagatsinghpur station IIC Prabhas Sahu along with a scientific team also visited the spot. The accused was caught near a high school a few hours later.

“The accused has had heated arguments with his family members over various issues. He told police that he was under severe stress for the past five-six days and had not been able to get proper sleep. He also said his father had assaulted him after accusing him of taking drugs and broke one of his teeth. He might have committed this crime in a fit of rage,” the SP told The Indian Express.

Surjyakant’s elder brother, Ramakanta Sethi, said that his brother was behaving erratically of late and had frequent clashes with his parents over his addiction to online games. “He would spend long hours playing online games,” he told PTI.
