Sitapur (Uttar Pradesh): The nose of a woman was allegedly cut off by her in-laws after she refused to withdraw a case of triple talaq, news agency ANI reported on Thursday.
“We got a complaint in which a man gave triple talaq over the phone. Both families were called and a counselling attempt was made. When the matter was not resolved, we filed a case under the relevant section of the triple talaq Act. The woman was later beaten up and admitted to a hospital. She sustained injuries on the nose,” the report quoted police as saying.
“They (the woman’s in-laws) had a sharp weapon and used it to cut her nose. They also hit me with stones,” a relative of the victim said.
Notably, Parliament has recently passed Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 that criminalises pronouncing triple talaq for instant divorce.
