Sundargarh: One person died while driver of a 16-wheeler truck sustained grievous injuries after it veered off a bridge and plunged into the Sankh river in Odisha’s Sundargarh district late Sunday night.
According to sources, the accident took place on Jamunanaki bridge under Birmitrapur police limits, when
the truck driver lost control over the vehicle after hitting a divider and fell off the structure into the river below near Vedvyas.
Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle veered dangerously before crashing through the bridge’s side barriers and plunging into the water. One person died on the spot due to the impact, while the truck driver sustained severe injuries. Local police and Fire Service personnel soon arrived at the scene and pulled the victims from the wreckage. The driver was then rushed to the government hospital at Rourkela for treatment.
A case has been registered and investigation is underway to determine whether mechanical failure, overspeeding, or driver fatigue led to the mishap.
