Trudeau Faces Backlash For Post On Cannabis Legalisation Anniversary

New Delhi: Canadian Prime Minister Justine Trudeau took to X to mark the sixth anniversary of cannabis legalisation across Canada and got massively trolled for doing so not just by Indians but also by people elsewhere including his own country.

Indians venting their anger over cannabis legalisation is understandable given the current diplomatic war on Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing. But people in his country blasting him for what many would think a revolutionary decision underscores his growing unpopularity in the country, various news reports said.

“Six years ago today, we changed an outdated law, took profits away from criminals, and made our communities safer. We legalised cannabis across Canada,” Trudeau shared on X on Thursday.

A little earlier, the leader of the opposition, Pierre Poilievre, had mentioned the proliferation of drug users as one of the failures of Trudeau’s nine years of rule as the prime minister.

Poillievre commented on X,  “Canada isn’t the country we remember anymore after 9 years of Trudeau. Doubling housing costs & bringing crime, chaos, drugs & disorder to our streets. Not. Worth. The. Cost.” He also shared an opinion poll form for people to say whether they agree with his opinion on Trudeau.

An X user commented that he should next legalise fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use as an analgesic (pain relief) and anaesthetic.

“Next we legalise fentanyl, We are in talks with Mexican cartels to supply us with fentanyl so we can make the future of Canada bright,” said an account sarcastically.

Sputnik India, which claims to provide news sans Western influences, shared a 59-second video clipping showing drug users on Canada’s streets.

“Don’t let Trudeau fool you: Sputnik India takes you on a tour of Canada, where the growing drug epidemic is becoming impossible to ignore. Are these public attacks on India an attempt to distract Canadian voters from the problems at home?” Sputnik India posted on X.

Stephen Talor, who Poilievre and Barack Obama follow, shared with a facepalming emoji, “A whole generation of people need to be millionaires to buy homes. But free wee. Good Job.”

Internet personality Rishi Bagree commented, “So even Trudeau admits that he has no achievement in the last 6 years. Reason he is bragging legalising Cannabis as an achievement which happened 6 years back.”
