Bengaluru: In what could raise the worries of Trucaller users in India, some reports have revealed that data from the mobile app is being sold on the ‘dark-web’ for about Rs 1.5 lakh.

Economic Times carried a report on Wednesday morning saying the data in the form of email, phone number and addresses of the users are being sold on the internet forums.

It carried the report based on the assessment of the cybersecurity analysts who monitor such transactions.

Indian users comprise of 60-70 per cent of the Truecaller’s user base of about 140 million and therefore more susceptible to their private information being leaked.

What makes users’ of the popular smartphone app truly vulnerable is that it also offers payment services through the Unified Payment Interface (UPI). Moreover, it also has a premium model where paying subscribers can search for an unlimited set of numbers on the platform, said online portal entrackr.com

Cyber experts are of the view that such a large chunk of data could only be accessed by breaching the database of Truecaller, ET said.

Truecaller, however, dismissed such allegations.

“It has been recently brought to our attention that some users have been abusing their accounts. In light of this event, we would like to strongly confirm at this stage that no sensitive user information has been accessed or extracted, especially our users financial or payment details,” ET said quoting a spokesperson of Truecaller.
