Dhenkanal: A giant tusker got electrocuted in Hindol forest range of Dhenkanal district on Thursday after coming in contact with a live wire.
Residents spotted the dead elephant at a farmland near Karnapur beat house and informed forest officials.
According to a preliminary investigation report, the tusker got trapped in electric wires laid on the ground by poachers.
Strong action will be taken against the culprits, forest department officials said.
Earlier, in the first week of January, too, a tusker was killed after coming in contact with a live wire at Dudurkot forest under Hindol range. Last October, seven wild elephants were electrocuted in a similar way on the outskirts of Kamalanga village under Sadar Forest Range of Dhenkanal district.
