New Delhi: The Cyber Cell of Delhi Police has arrested an independent ‘journalist’ for allegedly circulating a fabricated video that falsely depicted ACP Vivek Bhagat engaging in sexually inappropriate conduct with a woman during recent protests against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The video, circulated on Instagram and Facebook, was apparently manipulated and falsely presented as CCTV footage.
The photograph, name and designation of Bhagat — who has been at the centre of controversy following complaints of sexual harassment by female journalists — were displayed with the purported footage.
The accused, identified as Nadeem Ahmed Ameen, was nabbed from Haryana’s Mewat region.
According to police, Nadeem works as an independent journalist and operates an Instagram news account News Aina Today. A mobile phone allegedly used to circulate the video was recovered from him.
Nadeem apparently wanted to malign Bhagat, against who the Crime Branch is probing allegations made by a female journalist who has accused the officer of inappropriate conduct.
Nadeem was arrested under sections of the IT Act, Forgery, Provoke Breach of Peace, and other sections of the BNS after police observed and analysed accounts on Instagram and other social media platforms which circulated posts allegedly showing a senior police officer ‘molesting’ a woman.
Nadeem reportedly studied in a Madrasa and flunked class X. Police is further probing a channel that he set up in April.
Additional DCP Manjeet Sheoran told Times Now that Nadeem wanted to create unrest, adding that there are other YouTube channels that police are monitoring and also sharing the findings with the Crime Branch.
