Bhubaneswar: Two anticipated low pressure areas over Bay of Bengal may trigger heavy to fairly widespread rain in Odisha till July 18.
There is a moderate probability of formation of cyclonic circulation/low pressure area over westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal with subsequent north-westwards movement between July 7 and 11, according to IMD’s extended range forecast for two weeks (July 5 to 11 and July 12 to 18).
Fairly widespread to widespread rain/thundershower along with isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely in Odisha during the first week. Overall rainfall activity likely to be normal during this period.
It further stated that there is low probability of formation of another low pressure area over westcentral Bay of Bengal during the later half of second week (after July 13). Fairly widespread to widespread rain/thundershower may occur in Odisha during week-2 and overall rainfall activity is likely to be slightly above normal with possibility of isolated heavy to very heavy rain in some districts, it added.
“There is a possibility of formation of two low pressure areas, however, there are also chances that there could be only cyclonic circulations and they may not intensify further,” Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre director Manorama Mohanty told the media.
Notably, the first low pressure of this monsoon season had formed on June 27 and triggered rains across the state.
Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places in Koraput and Malkangiri on Sunday. Heavy rainfall is also likely at Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Kandhamal.
