Bhubaneswar: In an example of their dedication to service of the people, police have helped carry dead bodies with great risk in two separate incidents in Jajpur and Kandhamal districts.
In one case, a youth identified as Ranjan Kumar Kar of Sankarakula village under Bari block of Jajpur district had gone missing two days back. His body was found floating in flooded Brahmani river at Isanapur on Friday.
Since the locals did not identify the body and were afraid of entering the river in spate, they informed Bari police station. Four policemen entered the river risking their lives and retrieved the body.
But carrying the body was almost an impossible task as the entire area was under floodwater and ambulance or any vehicle could not reach the spot. With no way out, the policemen kept the body on a trolley-rickshaw and carried it wading through floodwater for two km to reach the main road. Later, the body was carried in an ambulance for post-mortem.
In another similar incident, policemen had to carry a dead body on their shoulders from a remote area in Kandhamal district.
Following information that a youth was allegedly murdered, a team from Baliguda police station led by inspector-in-charge Rabindra Mundar reached the place.
From preliminary investigation, the police came to know that the youth had died several days back and his body had started to decompose. Since the spot, where his body was found, was inaccessible for any vehicle, the IIC and family members carried it on a stretcher trekking through forest and hilly areas to reach the main road.
Later, the police registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem.
In both cases, the dedicated policemen have earned praise from their higher officials and the local people.
