Cuttack: Two elephants got stuck midwater while wading through the Mahanadi near Bhagipur in Banki area of Odisha’s Cuttack on Wednesday.
A team from the Forest Department reached the spot soon after being alerted by locals and is keeping a close watch on the movement of the wild animals. While efforts are on to make the animals come to the shore, they are seemingly staying away due to the congregation of people at the spot.
The jumbo pair was reportedly crossing the river to reach Chandaka sanctuary from Sukasen forest when they got stuck in the waterbody last night, sources said.
This comes almost a year after a tusker died after getting stuck in swollen Mahanadi while trying to ensure that a calf of its herd could cross the flooded river safely.
