Baripada: Two cases of gangrape – one of a young girl and another of a 50-year-old woman – in one day have sent shockwave in Mayurbhanj district.
In both the sexual assault cases that took place on Friday evening, youths in inebriated condition were involved. In one case, the young girl, a Plus III student, along with her boyfriend was going from Balasore to Baripada on a two-wheeler. While they had stopped near Kalama Square under Bisinga police limits, two youths in drunken condition saw them.
The two youths called one of their friends over phone and three of them reached the spot where the girl and her boyfriend were standing. The youths beat up the boyfriend mercilessly, tied him to a tree and dragged the girl to nearby forest where they raped her.
Meanwhile, while a team of Baisinga police team on patrolling duty in the area saw the boyfriend tied to a tree and two motorcycles parked on roadside. Suspecting something foul, they went to the spot and released the boyfriend who told them about the incident. The police also rescued the girl and brought her and her boyfriend to the police station.
On noting the detailed information from the girl, a police team led by Baisinga IIC Prabhanshu Sekhar Mishra went to the spot and nabbed the three youths. Later, the police registered a case and arrested the three accused.
The second incident took place under Raruan police limits when the 50-year-old woman was returning home after attending a Dussera function at Tangia village.
IIC of Raruan Police Station Dayanidhi Das said, after the function was over, the woman was offered lift by two two youths on a motorcycle. Instead of taking her to her village, the youths went to the banks of Khairibandan river and raped here. The incident took place around 200 metre from Sukruli fire station.
On hearing the scream of the woman, some Fire personnel rescued her and took her to Sukruli CHC. Later, police registered a case on the basis of the statement of the woman. Investigation into the incident was underway and a search operation has been launched to trace the accused, said Das.
