Bhubaneswar: The two persons, who died following derailment of Howrah-Mumbai mail in Jharkhand, belonged to Odisha.
Sources identified the deceased as Ajit Kumar Samal (34) and P Bikash Rao (27). The duo hailed from Rourkela. Samal was a resident of Malgodown area and Rao of Railway Colony.
Ajit’s mother told the media that he had gone to Tatanagar for some work. “He had called around 2 pm yesterday to ask about his son. He had also called at night, informing that he would soon board a train for home,” she said.
The duo, who used to work under a local contractor, left their homes for Tatanagar on Monday morning.
According to their families, the two had initially planned to take a different train to Rourkela. But having missed it, they ended up boarding the Mumbai mail instead.
THE ACCIDENT
The train derailed near Badabamboo, around 80 km from Jamshedpur, at around 3.45 am. Twenty other were injured in the accident. They were given first aid by the Railways’ medical team and later shifted to Chakradharpur Railway Hospital and CHC Khutpani.

Out of the 18 coaches that derailed, 16 were passenger ones, one was the power car and the other, the pantry car. The exact reason for the derailment is being ascertained.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the family of deceased, Rs 5 lakh towards grievous injuries, Rs 1 Lakh for simple injuries.
