New Delhi: Two law students of Lucknow University have been arrested by the Delhi Police for disrupting proceedings in the Supreme Court last week.
One of them has been accused of hurling abuses at Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and flinging case papers inside the courtroom.
The two have been identified Prabal Pratap Singh (24), a third-year law student, and Chander Bhan (23), of the second year as reported by Live Law.
The police said that an FIR was registered at the Tilak Marg Police Station based on a complaint by the Supreme Court security staff regarding the incident that occurred on July 10 before the bench of Justice K V Viswanathan and Justice Alok Aradhe.
Singh, who was appearing as a petitioner-in-person, disr
upted the proceedings by using abusive language against the judges and throwing his case files inside the courtroom. The police also accused him of obstructing Supreme Court security personnel in the discharge of their duties when they attempted to restrain him.
The incident took place during the hearing of Singh’s petition challenging an April 2026 judgment of the Allahabad High Court.
Instead of making legal submissions at the outset of the hearing, Singh addressed the Bench in an unusual manner, saying, “Mr judicial servant, I order you to order the registration of an FIR against the Assistant Commissioner of Police of Lucknow.”
Justice Viswanathan reacted to this remark and asked: “You are ordering me? You are ordering us?”
“That is all from my side. Everything is on record,” Singh replied before throwing papers into the air and hurling abuses at the CJI, who was not present in the courtroom. He was soon escorted out by security personnel.
Bhan’s exact role in the matter is not known.
Despite the outburst, the bench had observed in its order dated July 10 that it did not wish to initiate any action against Singh, considering the condition of the petitioner. The security staff thought otherwise.
Meanwhile, the video of the incident meanwhile became viral on social media. A few months ago, a lawyer had hurled shoes at the CJI during a hearing.
