Balangir: Two under-trial prisoners (UTPs) have escaped from Titilagarh sub-jail in Odisha’s Balangir district, jail authorities informed on Sunday.
Sumit Bihari (23) and Sobhaban Rana (28), the UTPs, allegedly fled by scaling the 40-ft boundary wall of the jail, using a ladder kept in a locked room, around 9 pm on Saturday. The matter came to light after the jail authorities took attendance of the prisoners last night.
Jail officials suspect that they might have been assisted by some outsiders and also used a rope as it was not possible to scale the wall with only a ladder. “We were in the office. They asked permission to go to the washroom in the evening and that is when they escaped. We suspect somebody has helped them to get out of the jail,” Sub-Assistant Jailer Chaitanya Pradhan was quoted as saying.
Two special police teams have been formed and raids are being conducted at multiple places to nab the fugitives.
Sobhaban Rana was an accused in a human sacrifice incident at Sindhekela and has been in jail for the last four years. Bihari was also behind the bars for the past two years in connection with a murder case.
