Nabarangpur: Two persons escaped from police custody in a court after their conviction in an ATM loot case in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district on Monday.
According to sources, the ATM kiosk of State Bank of India (SBI), located in front of Nabarangpur block office, was looted on January 31, 2024. Following investigation into the loot, the police had arrested five persons.
The arrested persons included Sakil Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Fazal Khan and Jahul Khan from Haryana and Nikhil Kumar from Bihar. Later, Sakil and Shahrukh had been granted bail by the court.
All the five accused were produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) at Nabarangpur for hearing of the case. was scheduled to announce its verdict on Monday. After hearing the case and examining the evidences produced by the police, the court convicted the five accused and sentenced them to imprisonment for 7 years.
Soon after the court announced its verdict, Sakil and Shahrukh managed to give a slip to the police and escaped from the premises.
The police have launched a manhunt to trace the two escaped convicts. They were carrying out checking and blocking operation in the town and its nearby areas, the sources said.
