Two Suspected Monkeypox Cases Reported In Ghaziabad, UP

New Delhi: Two suspected cases of monkeypox were reported in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad on Wednesday. Samples of the suspected patients have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune for confirmation, India Today reported.

Just a day before, Delhi reported its first monkeypox case. The patient, who has been admitted to the city’s Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, had no history of foreign travel.

Notably, the World Health Organisation has declared monkeypox a public health emergency.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “The global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern.”

Dr Tedros pointed out that a month after an Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations was convened to assess whether the multi-country monkeypox outbreak represented a public health emergency of international concern, the outbreak has continued to grow, and there are now more than 16,000 reported cases from 75 countries and territories, and five deaths.
