Uber Closes Down Its Mumbai Office; Operations To Continue

Mumbai: Cost cutting has been at the forefront for every organisation during this COVID-19 pandemic. App cab major Uber too felt the pinch and was forced to shut its Mumbai office as part of global churning.

Sources indicated that despite shutting its office, the cab service will operate unhindered in the city. Uber has decided to shut down 45 offices worldwide and Mumbai’s closure is part of that global exercise.

Going by media reports, there were 25 employees and 150 contractual staff in Uber’s Mumbai office. The company had laid off around 600 full-time staff when its business was impacted by the coronavirus outbreak in May.

Uber’s India and South Asia businesses president, Pradeep Parameswaran, had said in a statement that the affected employees were from across driver and rider support teams, among other functions.

“The impact of Covid-19 and the unpredictable nature of the recovery has left Uber India with no choice but to reduce the size of its workforce. Around 600 full-time positions across driver and rider support, as well as other functions, are being impacted,” Parameswaran had said in the statement.
