Mumbai: Ruling parties and even the Opposition are often at loggerheads with the Governor, who is appointed by the President of India.
In recent examples, West Bengal saw an acrimonious reign of now-Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Kerala government is having disagreements with Arif Mohammad Khan, and there is discontent with Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari as well.
Koshyari came under a scathing attack from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday.
Describing Koshyari as a “parcel sent via Amazon to Maharashtra”, Uddhav demanded the recall of the Governor over his recent statement on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The former Maharashtra chief minister even threatened a protest if Koshyari was not removed.
“This governor is a parcel sent via Amazon to Maharashtra by the Central government. In the next two-three days, we will decide the course of action. It could even be a Maharashtra bandh. I appeal to all political parties to come together for the same,” said Thackeray.
“We appeal to even those in the BJP, who love Maharashtra, to join us,” he added.
Last week, Koshyari said in Aurangabad that Chhatrapati Shivaji was an icon of ‘olden days’.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar also criticised Koshyari, saying he has crossed ‘all limits’.
Pawar added that such people should not be assigned crucial posts.
“When I heard his comments about Shiv Chhatrapati… now he has crossed all limits. He did praise Shivaji Maharaj yesterday, but it is a late realisation.. I think the President and the Prime Minister should take a decision (about Koshyari). Such people should not be given crucial posts,” Pawar said today, adding that NCP hadn’t commented so long to maintain dignity of the post of Governor which represents an institution.
