UGC Decision On University Exams Not To Be Revoked, Says Union Minister

New Delhi: Union Human Resources Development (HRD) minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on Tuesday said the UGC decision on university examinations is final and ruled out cancellation as demanded by some students’ bodies.

He said the UGC had changed its earlier guidelines for the university examinations in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Health ministry keeping in mind the safety, future, progress, and placement of the students, IANS reported.

The HRD ministry believes that students’ performance in the examinations would help them get admission to higher educational institutions, providing scholarships and getting better jobs. Hence, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the HRD ministry rejected the demand to cancel the examinations.

“Better performance in examinations gives students more confidence and satisfaction and also ensures qualification, lifetime reliability, and wide global acceptance,” Nishank said.

Many students’ bodies and teachers’ organizations in universities have opposed these examinations.

“Final year students who have a backlog should be evaluated by conducting examinations offline or online keeping in view the probability and suitability. If due to any reason, a final year student is unable to appear in the examination conducted by the university, then he/she would be given an opportunity to appear in special examinations for such paper,” the minister said.

The UGC on Monday announced that the universities will be conducting the final year or final semester examinations by the end of September keeping in view the academic prudence and maintaining credibility. The examinations can be held through offline, online or combination of both the modes, UGC clarified.
