Ujjain: How low can humans stoop to? And when will men’s mentality towards women change?
The ancient city of Ujjain, a popular pilgrimage destination, was a mute witness to yet another ghastly crime against women which has become commonplace in our country.
A woman was raped on a busy road in this bustling Madhya Pradesh city. And, to compound the nature of crime, passersby watched the horror, recorded the sexual assault on their phones and posted the video on social media.
Not surprisingly, the video went viral in next to no time.
It all happened on Wednesday afternoon in the Koyla Phatak area, one of Ujjain’s busiest intersections.
The accused, identified as Lokesh, has been arrested.
According to police, the survivor, a ragpicker, was lured by Lokesh under the pretext of marriage and convinced to accompany him.
He forced the woman to consume alcohol, took her to a roadside shelter in an intoxicated state and raped her.
The viral video helped police locate the survivor. She was taken to the police station, where a case was registered based on her statement. It didn’t take long for cops to apprehend Lokesh.
As is the norm in India, political leaders sought to take advantage of the terrible crime, with Congress blaming the ruling BJP for deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
“Ujjain, the sacred city, is once again shamed. Those in power should either die of shame or resign,” Madhya Pradesh Congress wrote on X alongside the video of the sexual assault.
