Cuttack: A man died after allegedly being stabbed for trying to defend the umpire during a cricket match at Mahisananda under Choudwar police limits in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Lucky Rout (22) of the locality.
According to sources, the incident took place around 12.30 pm during a cricket match between two teams- Berhampur and Sankarpur – at Mahisalanda village when the umpire declared a batter from the Berhampur team out after he was caught behind. The batting team, however, pressurised the umpire to change his decision to a ‘no-ball’ but he stood his ground. When Lucky tried to back the umpire, some spectators allegedly attacked him with bat and stabbed him with a knife in the chest.
The critically injured Rout was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital, but he succumbed during treatment.
Meanwhile, locals gheraoed police, which reached the spot to investigate the incident, demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
